Understanding polytrauma
Polytraumatic injury is a medical term for when someone suffers injuries to multiple body parts or organ systems.
Someone who has multiple separate injuries is likely to require care from multiple disciplines, for example, orthopaedics (bone doctors) and neurology (brain doctors).
Recovery from polytrauma can be a lengthy and arduous process, needing rehabilitation, surgical interventions, and psychological support. It often means that the injured person may have to be off work for a long period of time and need significant therapies and rehabilitation to go back to the things they did before their injury.
