Understanding polytrauma

Polytraumatic injury is a medical term for when someone suffers injuries to multiple body parts or organ systems.

Someone who has multiple separate injuries is likely to require care from multiple disciplines, for example, orthopaedics (bone doctors) and neurology (brain doctors).

Recovery from polytrauma can be a lengthy and arduous process, needing rehabilitation, surgical interventions, and psychological support. It often means that the injured person may have to be off work for a long period of time and need significant therapies and rehabilitation to go back to the things they did before their injury.

Your rights and eligibility

People who have suffered from multiple injuries or polytrauma may be entitled to compensation, depending on the circumstances surrounding the incident that caused their injury and if someone else was at fault.

For instance, if you sustained multiple injuries in a road traffic accident in a vehicle, riding a motorbike or bicycle, or as a pedestrian. It could be from an accident at work, a fall from a horse or an injury caused by an animal. If someone else’s actions or negligence caused your injuries, please get in contact with us to find out if you have a valid compensation claim.

Regardless of what led to your injuries – or those of a loved one or child – if someone else was wholly or partially at fault, our work is to understand what needs the injuries have caused and help secure compensation to help you and them cope with the implications. Please contact us to see if we can support you.

How can compensation help?

Compensation can’t undo the harm that you’ve suffered but it can help cover costs involved in:

  • ongoing care and assistance
  • loss of earnings
  • accessing treatment
  • medical equipment
  • home adaptations
  • counselling

A specialist solicitor will be able to carefully consider and research both the immediate costs you may incur and build things that may arise in the future into your claim too. As some claims cannot be revisited once they have been settled it’s incredibly important to instruct solicitors who are experienced enough to consider this fully, such as us here at Enable Law.

Polytrauma compensation FAQs

The amount of compensation we can claim depends on the specific injuries you have suffered and the long term impact they have in your life. The amount can range significantly but for some clients whose injuries resulted into significant life long needs we have recovered millions of pounds to enable them to meet them.

Compensation awards for personal injury and medical negligence are often agreed on a full and final basis which means it is not possible to ask for a further settlement for the same injury at a later date.

This is why we won’t rush your claim. It’s vital to get the full and thorough picture of all the aspects of an injuries may have for a person, now and in the future, are known. It’s part of the reason we call on medical experts to provide evidence to support our cases

Where blame is accepted in regard to the injuries, it is often possible to secure interim compensation payments to help people before a full and final settlement is reached.

In some cases a full and final settlement is not appropriate as it is not yet possible to quantify aspects of the claim that may arise in the future. In those cases there may be an agreement for periodical payments, usually in addition to an initial settlement.
